Rachel K Gillies, Facebrushed (2013), 6 x 4” Photo Print (Framed)

The University of Brighton, in celebration of the diverse research they do held a competition for staff and postgraduate students to submit a visualisation of their research project(s). Very pleased to announce that I was the joint winner! Yay. The image and text below is what I submitted. The image is part of my final work for my MRes Thesis.
“This image aims to visualise my practice-based MRes research project investigating the aesthetic of erasure in contemporary digital arts photography and exploring the impact of these practices upon the way we understand the photograph, both as a digital and an analogue image.

The project explores what is lost and what remains when communication and technology come together in and through the surface of the photographic image. Looking at ideas of erasure, meaning both the act of erasing and the mark left behind in the process, this research investigates tensions that occur through technologies that promise more than they deliver and proposes an aesthetic that emerges through losses in mediated communication.”
